Suggestions for Members Considering Home Repairs

FINDING A REPUTABLE CONTRACTOR

1. Ask for referrals from other members of the church or from friends who have had similar work done or check Mark’s List on the St. Mark web site for referrals from other members of the church. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call the church office and ask Jeanne to look for a referral on the list.

2. Call the Better Business Bureau to see if there are complaints concerning the service provider that you are considering.

3. Make sure any contractors you call are licensed and insured

4. Beware of anyone who comes to your door unsolicited..

INTERVIEWING AND GETTING ESTIMATES

1. If possible, have someone with you when the contractor is there to do the estimate and to do the work.

2. Be sure to request the identification of any person who comes to your house.

3. Ask questions. Keep a list in writing as you think of things you need or things you want to have clarified.

4. Before someone comes to do an estimate, make sure that there is not a cost for the estimate.

5. Beware of anyone who tries to pressure you into making a decision. A reputable contractor is willing to give you time to consider your decision and to discuss it with family and friends.

6. It’s generally good to get two or three estimates before making a decision.

MAKING YOUR DECISION

1. There are many people who would take advantage or scam. Take your time and consult others prior to making a decision.

2. Make sure that you are comfortable and have a full understanding of the work to be done and the costs.
